Dear Friends,
The recent storms have passed and the sun is shining brightly! I am pleased to announce that the Thumbs Up After-School Tutorial Program will re-open on Monday, November 5, 2018. Students will return the week prior for an orientation and to help set up their classrooms. I would first like to express my deep appreciation for your volunteerism in the past year. More importantly, your personal attention to the children and your thoughtful gestures of kindness did not go unnoticed. We would like to invite you to return as a tutor again this year, but we also realize that circumstances in our lives change over time. Maybe you would like to volunteer in a different capacity: a snack provider, joining the fundraising committee, or being a weekly crafts instructor. We will continue to primarily serve grades K-4 students , and tracking upper grade students who may occasionally attend for extra help. It has been a long ordeal for us since July 19, 2018 and the unforeseen storm of the summer significantly damaged our little building. I am very appreciative that Mr. Woody Rutter, our chairman, rolled up his sleeves to handle insurance and contractors. With flood insurance, we have repaired the building with new floors, cabinets, sinks, and newly painted walls. We have also had to expend additional finances out-of-pocket to replace or to repair other damages. Everything will not be set in place by your start date, but we will slowly get there. We are also planning a “blessing and house warming” when we all get back (will be announced). We only have 10 children currently registered, but have reached out to the schools for more referrals. The numbers are tight due to a couple of new after-school programs that have opened and have recruited from the same population as Thumbs Up. Ms. Charlesetta Sterling will be returning as my classroom assistant. Volunteer tutors may sign up for their preferred days of the week and we can discuss your preferred tutor when you arrive (or by email). Please contact us for details.
