Serving Beaufort Area Students & Their Families Since 1995
Thumbs Up Children's Educational Center provides a year-round early intervention program for economically disadvantaged children who are performing below grade level in school. We partner with their parents, who often lack a variety of skills to help them with school work, their teachers and their schools. Referred children, ages 6-12, and their families participate in a multi-year program that builds continuity, trusting relationships, positive parent involvement, and improved academic achievement. It is our vision that these struggling children, who are at risk of failing in school, can become proficient readers, improve their academic performance and graduate on time. Thumbs Up is a volunteer-driven program that offers one-on-one tutorial homework sessions, enrichment activities and a focus on character development, which are key to enhancing students' academic progress, self-esteem and socially acceptable behaviors.
Thumbs Up is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and a United Way agency in northern Beaufort County. All program amenities, including transportation, are at no cost to parents. During the school year, the after-school program hosts more than 40 tutors who work with elementary and middle school students on homework assignments daily from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Our volunteers are caring adults, the majority of whom are retired educators and business persons. The six-week summer program is held five days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Summer sessions are designed as fun-filled hands-on experiential learning activities, providing students with more time for projects, field trips and service learning. We are proud that since 1995, Thumbs Up has made a difference in the lives of dozens of young people whose lives were made better because benefactors invested in their future.
